The tatami in Aichi-Nagoya had already carried the full arc of a continental championship when the conversation that followed the medals took on another register. On 25 September 2026, the World Karate Federation published an account of a meeting at the hinge between a finished competition and the wider Olympic Movement: WKF President Antonio Espinós received Soraya Aghaei, a member of the International Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission, in the host region of the 2026 Asian Games karate programme.
It was not a results press conference. It was diplomacy of presence — the kind that happens when an official from the athletes' side of the Olympic house walks into a venue still warm from kumite and kata, and the leadership of the international federation makes time to listen and to speak.
A medal ceremony, then a meeting
According to the WKF, Mrs Aghaei visited the karate competition for a medal award. She was on site for a ceremonial moment that places athletes, officials and the symbols of victory in the same frame. From that visit grew an opportunity to meet the WKF President — and, the federation notes, WKF General Secretary Toshihisa Nagura was also present.
The cast is small and precise: Espinós, Aghaei, Nagura. What the WKF does say is that the gathering provided space to discuss the values of karate and the excitement that had surrounded the competition at the Asian Games. In the same breath, the federation reports that the meeting addressed progress made in improving conditions for karate athletes, as well as the Olympic prospects of the sport — outlook and advocacy rather than a named host city, Session vote or programme decision.
In Aichi-Nagoya, the message was an invitation to see what the sport had just shown on the continental stage.
After the last champions
Two days earlier, on 23 September, the WKF had already closed the competitive chapter. The final day of Asian Games karate in Aichi-Nagoya crowned the last champions and brought the event to its end. The federation's own wrap spoke of a memorable showcase: athletes from across Asia competing at a high level while displaying the discipline, respect and determination that define the sport. Those words — discipline, respect, excellence — echo again in the later account of the Espinós–Aghaei meeting, as if the competition and the diplomatic handshake were two faces of the same argument.
First the tatami empties of contested bouts; then an IOC Athletes' Commission member who came for a medal ceremony sits with the WKF President and General Secretary. The Games remain a multi-sport platform; karate's case, in Espinós's own words, is the value it brings to that platform.
Soraya Aghaei and the Athletes' Commission
The IOC's public profile lists Soraya Aghaei Haji Agha as a member of the IOC Athletes' Commission from 2026 and as an IOC Member, with badminton as her sport and Iran as her NOC code. She competed at the Olympic Games in 2020. That is the role under which the WKF welcomed her in Aichi-Nagoya: an Athletes' Commission voice from another Olympic sport, not a former karateka speaking from inside the discipline.
In Espinós's attributed phrasing, she is also a visitor whose native country is Iran, where he said karate ranks among the most popular sports — a national note that comes from the President's own quotation and from the IRI listing on her IOC profile.
The President's words
Espinós's statement, published in full by the WKF, is the clearest primary voice available:
“I would like to thank IOC Athletes' Commission member Mrs Soraya Aghaei for taking the time to attend the Karate competition here in Aichi-Nagoya. Karate is not only one of the most popular sports in Iran, Mrs Aghaei's native country, but also across Asia. We hope that Mrs Aghaei has been able to experience the excitement and values of our sport here in Aichi-Nagoya and to see first-hand the tremendous added value that Karate brings to multi-sport events.”
The quote thanks. It situates karate's popularity in Iran and across Asia. It hopes that an Athletes' Commission member has felt, on the ground, both the atmosphere of the competition and the sport's contribution to multi-sport festivals. The “Olympic prospects” mentioned in the WKF narrative remain prospects discussed in that room — not a declared outcome for any future Games programme.
The meeting underscored, in the federation's wrap, a strong connection between karate, its athletes and the Olympic Movement. Aichi-Nagoya was another important platform to showcase the sport to a wide Asian audience; the WKF says so. What Espinós asked Aghaei to take away was the excitement, the values, and the added value karate brings when it sits inside a multi-sport festival.
A seat at the edge of the tatami
What remains on the record is modest and concrete: a President, a General Secretary, an Athletes' Commission member; a medal-award visit; talk of values, athlete conditions, excitement and prospects; a President's hope that the visitor saw karate's place among multi-sport events; a competition that had just concluded as a continental highlight.
The Asian Games gave karate a stage. Aghaei's presence gave the Olympic athletes' channel a seat at the edge of the tatami. Espinós used the moment to thank her and to argue for the sport's place in the multi-sport imagination of Asia and beyond.
After the last medals of Aichi-Nagoya, karate's international leadership spoke not only to results, but to representation — to the people who carry athletes' voices inside the Olympic Movement, and to the hope that what they see on the tatami will travel with them when they leave the venue.
