Chōjiro Tani, born on January 25, 1921 and died on January 11, 1998, was a Japanese karateka who played a key role in the spread of karate in Europe, and particularly in France. He is best known for founding the Shukokai style of karate.
Tani was born in Kobe, Japan. He began practicing karate at the age of 13, under the tutelage of Chōjun Miyagi, the founder of the Goju-ryu style. Later, Tani continued his karate studies at Doshisha University, where he was trained by Kenwa Mabuni, the founder of the Shito-ryu style.
In 1948, after graduating, Tani opened his own dojo in Kobe, where he began teaching the Shito-ryu style. Over time, however, he began to modify and adapt the style to make it more effective and accessible. The result was the creation of the Shukokai style, which means “the way for all”.
The Shukokai style is characterized by its emphasis on speed, fluidity and efficiency. It combines elements of Goju-ryu and Shito-ryu, as well as other karate styles, to create a unique and complete system. Shukokai is also renowned for its distinctive striking technique, designed to maximize power and minimize contact time with the opponent.
In 1965, Tani moved to Europe, where he worked to spread karate and Shukokai. He opened dojos in several countries, including France, England and Norway, and trained many students who went on to become instructors in their own right.
Despite his success as an instructor, Tani never stopped training himself. He continued to study other styles of karate and martial arts throughout his life, and always sought to improve and refine the Shukokai style.
Tani passed away in 1998, but his legacy lives on. The Shukokai style he founded is practised all over the world, and his students continue to teach and promote karate according to his principles and philosophy.
