Tsuguo Sakumoto is a world-renowned karate master, especially renowned for his expertise in kata. Born on March 12, 1947 in Okinawa, Japan, Sakumoto is an adept of the Ryuei-ryu style of karate.
Sakumoto began his karate training at the age of 15, studying under Ryuei-ryu master Kenko Nakaima. Under Nakaima’s guidance, Sakumoto learned not only karate techniques, but also the values of discipline and respect that lie at the heart of this martial art.
Over the course of his career, Sakumoto won numerous titles in kata competition. He was three times world champion in individual kata (1982, 1984 and 1986) at the World Karate Federation’s World Karate Championships. His dedication and exceptional technical mastery have made him an emblematic figure in the world of karate.
In addition to his competitive career, Sakumoto has also devoted his life to teaching karate. He is the chief instructor of the Ryuei-ryu Karate-Do Association and has trained numerous students, continuing to pass on the Ryuei-ryu heritage to the next generation.
Beyond his impact on the world of karate, Sakumoto has also contributed to his community as a public servant. He was a member of the Japanese House of Representatives, where he worked to promote sport and improve sports infrastructures.
