The European Karate Federation (EKF) has officially announced the creation of a new competition category: U21 Kata Team (male and female). This historic decision will come into effect on January 1, 2026 and will be implemented at the EKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships in Cyprus, February 2026.
A Milestone for U21 Athletes
Until now, U21 competitors could only participate in individual kata events. The addition of a team category will significantly expand opportunities for young athletes at the European level. With kata teams requiring three athletes, the decision will increase participation and broaden the competitive experience of U21 athletes, especially at a time when their presence in international events is under transition.
Context: The WKF Youth League and U21 Adjustments
Starting in 2026, the U21 categories will no longer be included in the WKF Youth League. This change could have left a gap for young kata specialists seeking high-level competition. By introducing the U21 Kata Team division, the EKF ensures that these athletes continue to have a platform to perform, develop, and showcase their skills at one of the most prestigious continental events.
Decision Process
The initiative was first proposed jointly by the EKF President and the Organizing Committee Chair, who requested a feasibility analysis. After review, the proposal was submitted to the EKF Executive Committee (EC). The EC voted unanimously in favor, confirming the growing importance of kata within the European karate community.
Why This Matters
- More Opportunities: Athletes who might not qualify individually will still have the chance to compete in team kata.
- Technical Development: Team kata fosters synchronization, rhythm, and group dynamics—an advanced challenge for young practitioners.
- Pathway to Senior Level: This new category bridges the transition from youth competitions to senior elite team kata, where European countries have a strong tradition and international success.
Looking Ahead
The debut of the U21 Kata Team category in Cyprus 2026 will be closely watched by national federations, athletes, and coaches. It represents not only a reinforcement of the EKF’s commitment to kata but also a strategic step in ensuring continuity and growth for the next generation of karatekas.
